Creating a physician pipeline in the Great Lakes Bay Region

The health of the Great Lakes Bay Region is at a critical point, due to the fact that within our geographical area, and the state, there will be a major need of both primary care and specialty physicians. The Association of American Medical Colleges is predicting a shortage of between 22,000 and 50,000 primary care physicians nationally.

A thriving community requires access to quality health care, and local Rotary Clubs are addressing the need by creating an endowed scholarship fund for Central Michigan University College of Medicine students. The Thanks for Staying Rotary Scholarship will provide at least one CMU medical student a scholarship for $10,000. In return, the medical student will stay in the Great Lakes Bay Region and continue their education in one of our local residency programs. Nationally, 80 percent of residents choose to remain in the region where they complete their residency. Our community needs these highly trained physicians and their commitment to practicing in underserved rural and urban areas.

We are asking the Great Lakes Bay Region community to help with this important cause so the Thanks for Staying Rotary Scholarship can be awarded in the spring. This virtual fundraiser will help fund the endowment to continue scholarships for years to come!
