First Impressions
Help students be prepared for the professional world.
First Impressions, a 401-C non-profit, was founded at CMU in 2012 by First Lady Elizabeth Ross to provide students with free professional attire. It launched with a soft opening in November 2013 and a grand opening in March 2014, serving 106 students in its first year. The program has gained regional and national recognition, inspiring similar initiatives at other universities, including Michigan State University. In 2016, First Impressions was presented at the National Association of Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education.
Student Intern & Volunteer Benefits
First Impressions is run by an assistant director, a team of interns, and volunteers who manage appointments and inventory. Interns gain experience in inventory management, supervision, and professional styling, while volunteers develop transferable skills applicable across various industries. Students who utilize the service leave with professional clothing that supports their career success.
Community Partnerships
To ensure all students are accommodated, First Impressions purchases clothing when needed and collaborates with Clothing Inc., which donates professional wear. JCPenney’s Suit-Up event has also provided students with professional attire at up to 60% off, initially drawing over 100 participants. The event is now held online, ensuring continued accessibility for CMU students.
First Impressions is open weekly from:
Monday - Thursday - 8:00am - 5:00pm
Friday - 9:00am - 5:00 pm
You can make an appointment on Career Central: cmich.12twenty.com
Donating to First Impressions through CMU’s Ignite platform directly supports students by providing them with professional attire for interviews, internships, and career events. For example, a $125 donation can outfit a student with a complete suit—including pants, shirt, blazer, and tie.
